THE ULTIMATE CITIZEN RECORDMASTER COLLECTORS GUIDE
Citizen recordmaster Rmos 2901-T
The model RMOS 2901-T was released around December 1968, in fact all examples I have seen so far had this one month of production. The dial is an ivory silver and stepped. It has a fine sunburst finish to the raised part. Citizen recordmaster is printed near the top and Chronograph 21j near the bottom. There is no tachymeter scale upon the dial however the printed numbers are written as seconds to assist in reading off the elapsed time. It is without lume. There is a date window is at 3. The hands and applied hour markers are in polished stainless steel. The crystal is mineral, The crown is marked "C". |
The case is one of the larger recordmaster designs. The 4-570031T also uses this case it measures 38mm exc crown and 43mm lug to lug. Lug width is 18mm. Thickness is approx 13mm. The case back should look like the image shown here. The first 3 numbers of the serial relate do the manufacture date. This one is from December 1968. The etching is already deeper than that of the first model recordmasters and much more hardy. The bracelet is made up of slightly curved brushed elements separated by polished bead elements. It is a very common bracelet style in Citizen watches of this era. I am not aware of any other bracelet style for this model. The clasp is unsigned. |
The movement is the second iteration of Citizen's only hand winding chronograph movement, Citizen calibre 5701. It has 21 jewels and beats at a slow 18,000bph. Elapsed time can be measured for one minute. The user can start/stop and reset the chronograph as well as flyback (reset while running). The crown is pulled one stage to adjust the time. The date is not quick-set but is changed by advancing the hour hand past 12. The design is quite interesting. They have kept some of the nicer details from the first silver dial model with a couple of noticeable additions. Whilst many would prefer the idea of a recordmaster at a larger 38mm this case shape seems to lack the refinement of the 36mm case when the two are held side be side. |
Buying tips...
As with any of the one month production variants they should be considered in almost any "working" condition as there won't be many opportunities to acquire one. There are not a lot of other issues to look out for with this model. The crystal is mineral so if scratched is going to be much harder to polish up and a replacement will be scarce. The gold coloured inner part of the pushers is correct for this variant and seemingly only appear on the 5701 cal movement variants.
