THE ULTIMATE CITIZEN RECORDMASTER COLLECTORS GUIDE
Citizen recordmaster 4-570031T
The model 4-570031T was released around January 1971, in fact all examples I have seen so far had this one month of production. The dial is flat black and the text is crisp white. Citizen recordmaster is printed near the top and Chronograph 21j is printed near the bottom There is a cross hair through the centre and a tachymeter scale around the perimeter. The scale starts at 1000 and it typically can be used to measure speeds and distances. Date window is at three. The hands are baton style in matt black with lume up the middle. The sweephand is white in a syringe style. The hour markers are polished with lume strips in between. The crystal is mineral, The crown is marked "CTZ". |
.
The case is one of the larger recordmaster designs. The RMOS 2901-T also uses this case it measures 38mm exc crown and 43mm lug to lug. Lug width is 18mm. Thickness is approx 13mm. The case back should look like the image shown here. The first 3 numbers of the serial relate do the manufacture date. This one is from January 1971. The stamped 3 is sometimes mistaken for a 9. The bracelet is made up of slightly curved brushed elements separated by polished bead elements. It is a very common bracelet style in Citizen watches of this era. It is almost the same design as RMOS 2901-T but the links are slightly larger on this model. I am not aware of any other bracelet style for this model The clasp is signed Citizen. |
The movement is the third iteration of Citizen's only hand winding chronograph movement, Citizen calibre 5702. It has 21 jewels and beats at a slow 18,000bph. Elapsed time can be measured for one minute. The user can start/stop and reset the chronograph as well as flyback (reset while running). The crown is pulled one stage to adjust the time. The date is not quick-set but is changed by advancing the hour hand past 12. The design of the dial is similar to that of many of the smaller 36mm variants however it has one unique feature to those in that the tachymeter scale is starting at 1000. The hands are also quite different to any other recordmaster. This is definitely one of the more interesting pieces in the recordmaster lineup. |
Buying tips...
As with any of the one month production variants they should be considered in almost any "working" condition as there won't be many opportunities to acquire one. There are not a lot of other issues to look out for with this model. The crystal is mineral so if scratched is going to be much harder to polish up and a replacement will be scarce. Since it uses the later movement 5702 it may also be a little easier to find parts and have it serviced if found in a non working condition.
