THE ULTIMATE CITIZEN RECORDMASTER COLLECTORS GUIDE
Citizen recordmaster 4-570057TA
The model 4-570057TA rally custom was released around 1971, It is one of two* black coated recordmaster variants. I have called them (A),(B). The dial is flat black with a combination of white and orange* markings. Citizen recordmaster is printed near the top and rally custom, Chronograph 21j is printed near the bottom. There is an inner rotating ring as well as a tachymeter scale around the perimeter. The scale starts at 1000. The Date window is between four and five. The hands are baton style in white lume up the middle. The sweedhand is also orange*. The hour markers are a flat lume only strip. The crystal is mineral, The crowns are marked "CTZ". |
The case is one of the larger recordmaster designs. The 4-570065_TA also uses this case. It measures 41mm exc crown and 43mm lug to lug. Lug width is 18mm. Thickness is approx 12mm. The case back should look like the image shown here. It is not black coated. The first 3 numbers of the serial relate to the manufacture date. This one is from October 1971. I believe the BL is relating to the black coating. Here you can see the second crown that is used for turning the inner rotating ring. The strap is an 18mm rubber Tropic Sport with rally style holes in it.. Whilst the strap is tropic branded the buckle is stamped Citizen. Some were also manufactured with a black coated bracelet as shown on the catalogue scan pictured below. |
The movement is the third iteration of Citizen's only hand winding chronograph movement, Citizen calibre 5702. It has 21 jewels and beats at a slow 18,000bph. Elapsed time can be measured for one minute. The user can start/stop and reset the chronograph as well as flyback (reset while running). The crown is pulled one stage to adjust the time. The date is not quick-set but is changed by advancing the hour hand past 12. These are without a doubt the boldest and most sporty of all the recordmaster variants. They are larger and more brightly coloured. With the additional rotating ring and dial text they can also be useful for doing a lot more mathematical calculations than the other recordmaster variants. |
Buying tips...
There are a few things to point out here. Firstly I stated that there were two black coated recordmaster variants, The rally custom is one and the custom V2 is the other. However technically this "rallycustom" variant came in two different models. One is the 4-570057-TA and the other is the 4-570065-TA or (63-0314 for international resale). The two models are identical except the crowns on the latter are also black coated. The dial colours seem to range from a bright red to a pale yellow. It is unclear to date what the original manufactured colours were and which have come about due the colours fading. Yellow is a common result of fading of Citizen's orange printed dials. Either way red, orange or yellow examples can be found. It is certainly not the rarest recordmaster so it should not be too hard to find one although the black coating is often starting to wear away. The tachymeter bezel seems to be quite easily dinged and the crystal being mineral is not so easy to find and replace if badly scratched. The cutout for the second crown is large. This is one of the variants where it is worth holding off for a nice example.
